How to vet a prop firm before paying
Forex firms vs futures firms: what actually differs
The two halves of this industry sell different plumbing. Futures firms (the entire current Best Sellers top 10) route through regulated exchange products — CME contracts via Rithmic, Tradovate, or house platforms — with drawdowns quoted in dollars. Forex/CFD firms (the older Favorites cohort — FTMO, FundingPips, The5ers) run on broker-style platforms like MT5 with drawdowns quoted in percentages, wider instrument menus, and more variation in news-trading and weekend rules. Neither is safer by category. But comparisons only work within a half: a "10% max loss" forex rule and a "$4,000 EOD trailing" futures rule cannot be ranked against each other, which is one reason blended top-10 lists mislead.
The five checks that are actually yours to make
- The rule sheet for your exact plan and size. Rules differ between tiers of the same product. Firms that publish full rule pages (Traders Launch was the standout in our verification pass) are easier to trust than firms whose rules live behind checkout.
- How the drawdown moves. End-of-day trailing, intraday trailing, or locking at starting balance — this single mechanic decides most failed accounts. Our homepage guide explains the variants with examples from the current list.
- The funded-stage document, before you buy the evaluation. Payout minimums, cycles, caps, and consistency rules usually live in a second rulebook. A firm that cannot show it to you pre-purchase is asking you to buy blind.
- Your country, in their terms. Eligibility is a terms-page fact, not a marketing-page fact.
- Recent payout evidence. Not testimonials on the firm's site — recent third-party reports, with dates. Absence of complaints in a firm's first year means little; firms rarely fail at paying out small early cohorts.
What "cheapest" gets wrong
Price-led search is the most common way into this market and the most reliably misleading. Evaluation fees are a loss-leader for resets and repeat attempts: the discount culture is so aggressive that we observed advertised cuts of 35–80% across firms on the same day, and a fee that low signals the firm expects to sell you more than one. The number that predicts your total cost is not the sticker — it is the interaction between your trading style and the drawdown mechanics. Price the rule sheet, not the checkout page.
What we cannot vet for you
Solvency, payout reliability at scale, and how a firm behaves when a large account wins — the questions that matter most are exactly the ones outside reviewers cannot verify. Treat every ranking, ours included, as a popularity index over marketing-visible facts. The methodology page lists what we verified per firm and what we could not.
Common vetting questions
Which are the top 10 prop firms for forex?
Our current Best Sellers mirror is entirely futures firms, so this site does not publish a live forex top 10 right now. The forex firms from our earlier mirror — FTMO, FundingPips, The5ers, and others — still have profile pages here and appear on the Favorites list, but their order is pending re-verification. FTMO remains the one forex firm whose full rule sheet we verified against its own site.
What is the cheapest prop firm?
We deliberately do not answer this with a name. Evaluation prices change weekly with discount codes — we watched several firms on this list advertise 35–80% off simultaneously — so any "cheapest" ranking is stale on publication. More important: the cheap evaluation is not the cheap product. A $49 challenge with a tight trailing drawdown can cost more in resets than a $159 one with a locking drawdown. Compare rule sheets at your account size, then price.
Which prop firms accept US traders?
Several firms on the current list state a US base — Topstep (Chicago), Apex (Austin), My Funded Futures (Delaware, per third-party coverage), Funded Futures Family (Dallas, per third-party coverage) — and futures evaluations are generally more accessible to US residents than offshore CFD evaluations. But eligibility is set by each firm's terms, not its headquarters, and restricted-country lists change. Check the firm's own terms page before paying; we do not maintain a by-country eligibility table because we could not keep it verified.
Are prop firms legit?
The honest answer is that "legit" spans a spectrum in this industry. Most firms on this list sell simulated evaluations and pay from fee revenue, which is a legal business model — but it means your counterparty risk is the firm's solvency and its willingness to honor payouts, not a regulated exchange. No site can verify payout reliability from the outside, including this one. The vetting checklist below is what you can actually check yourself.
